We Will Teach You How to Write Cause and Effect Essays
The cause and effect essay is a type of writing assignment that asks you discuss the causes of something or the effects of something and how the two are related to one another. It’s usually given early in high school English Composition to strengthen skills required in writing other types of essays. The basic essay structure contains at least three parts: an introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Here is a breakdown of each part:
- The Introduction:
- The Body Paragraphs:
- The Conclusion:
The first part of your cause and effect essay comprises of the introduction, which includes to essential parts: 1) it catches your reader’s attention by introducing the subject in an creative and interesting way, and 2) it tells your reader what your essay will be about and what side of the discussion you are taking.
Your introduction should not only provide your reader with everything he or she needs to know to understand what you will be discussing, but it should also help your writing and presentation by organizing your main points.
Normally, cause and effect essays will have anything between 3 – 6 body paragraphs. The order of how causes and effects are presented is entirely up to the reader, but be sure to have a rationale behind your decision. If you start with a cause followed by an effect, then be sure you follow this same pattern in the next paragraphs.
Even before you start writing, try to structure your main causes and effects in your mind or in an outline. When you do finally get to starting you will already have an idea about how each component of your argument is related to the next. Your paper will be more structured and logical, and will be a much more pleasant read than one that is completely disorganized and jumps all over the place.
The third part of your paper is your conclusion and, like the introduction, should contain two distinct parts: 1) it should summarize the main points you made in your essay and 2) leave your reader with a good impression by satisfactorily arguing your point.
Many readers will determine the success of your paper by whether or not they remember your arguments. This being said, it’s easy to see why your summary, which will be read last, should clearly restate what it is you have accomplished in making your argument.
