    • While the assignment may assume a first-person perspective, the fact of the matter is that most students aren’t as experienced in writing a professional sounding academic piece in first person. This isn’t a fan fiction, and it shouldn’t read like one. Many of the problems students have with writing in first person can be avoided if they write a rough draft in third person first.

  • Be sincere, honest, and authentic.

    • Another problem is that students want to sensationalize their lives, their experiences, or themselves when writing these types of essays. That’s a bad idea; it’s very difficult to do so convincingly and puts a bad taste in the reader’s mouth. Simply write the truth.

  • Rewrite the essay in first person perspective, editing and proofreading as you go.
