Valuable hints for writing an essay about yourself
Essay assignments that require the writer to write about themselves are a double edged sword. On the one hand, it’s certainly a topic the writer knows a lot about. On the other, there are a number of pitfalls that are related to writing about one’s self. By avoiding these common problems, however, one can write a great essay that portrays them in a positive light.
- Come up with a strong theme.
- Create a well-organized outline.
- Write the rough draft in third person.
- Be sincere, honest, and authentic.
- Rewrite the essay in first person perspective, editing and proofreading as you go.
One of the first and most common mistakes students make when writing about themselves is to ramble. They know so much about the topic that they don’t go through the usual steps of organization, outlining, and thesis statement creation. These shouldn’t be skipped—despite the student’s knowledge of the subject (and sometimes because of it) rambling or lack of focus is a very risk. Consider the type of essay being assigned and come up with a central theme for the essay before beginning.
With this strong central theme as the inspiration, the student should craft a well-organized outline of the essay, including an introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. They should decide what the main idea of each body paragraph is and pay special attention to the order of the body paragraphs and the transitions between each main idea if they want to write an exceptional essay.
While the assignment may assume a first-person perspective, the fact of the matter is that most students aren’t as experienced in writing a professional sounding academic piece in first person. This isn’t a fan fiction, and it shouldn’t read like one. Many of the problems students have with writing in first person can be avoided if they write a rough draft in third person first.
Another problem is that students want to sensationalize their lives, their experiences, or themselves when writing these types of essays. That’s a bad idea; it’s very difficult to do so convincingly and puts a bad taste in the reader’s mouth. Simply write the truth.
Once the rough draft is done, the student should rewrite the essay, line by line, in first person perspective. This also allows them the chance to carefully proofread and edit the essay to create a great final draft.
