    • With this strong central theme as the inspiration, the student should craft a well-organized outline of the essay, including an introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. They should decide what the main idea of each body paragraph is and pay special attention to the order of the body paragraphs and the transitions between each main idea if they want to write an exceptional essay.

  • Write the rough draft in third person.

    • While the assignment may assume a first-person perspective, the fact of the matter is that most students aren’t as experienced in writing a professional sounding academic piece in first person. This isn’t a fan fiction, and it shouldn’t read like one. Many of the problems students have with writing in first person can be avoided if they write a rough draft in third person first.

  • Be sincere, honest, and authentic.

    • Another problem is that students want to sensationalize their lives, their experiences, or themselves when writing these types of essays. That’s a bad idea; it’s very difficult to do so convincingly and puts a bad taste in the reader’s mouth. Simply write the truth.

  • Rewrite the essay in first person perspective, editing and proofreading as you go.

    Once the rough draft is done, the student should rewrite the essay, line by line, in first person perspective. This also allows them the chance to carefully proofread and edit the essay to create a great final draft.
